As many members will know, Ray Evans, who ran BH Enterprises (BHE), passed away on 2 October 2023. Ray was an instrumental figure in railway modelling and in particular N Gauge, where he produced a multitude of products for the N Gauge Modeller from the 1980s onwards when RTR was a very limited choice from Graham Farish (Poole days) and Minitrix.
Ray produced a massive selection of parts to allow N Gauge modellers to create other models. The range covered complete loco, DMU, EMU, coach and wagon kits, conversion kits, detailing parts and accessories, as well as scenic detailing parts. Materials from white metal, etched brass & nickel silver to resin & injection mouldings were all used. He also retailed items from other small manufacturers and was a regular cheerful face on the exhibition circuit for many years. This included the difficult early 2000s after Graham Farish Poole ceased production and the protracted relaunch of models by Bachmann.
He is survived by his sons Brian and Andrew, who have continued the family business, which is run by Brian, with Andrew running Buzz models for the O Gauge specialist. Both Brian and Andrew are regular attendees at many shows and events around the country.
In honour of Ray’s memory, the Society approached his sons and asked what a fitting memorial wagon would be to celebrate his life and achievements as an N Gauge Modeller and supplier of many products to the fraternity. Brian and Andrew requested that we produce the ‘Procor’ Dry Powder Bogie Hopper (PBA) – Tripolyphosphate & Starch Wagon, which the NGS is producing as a way of saying thank you to Ray and family for the pioneering work he did to help get N Gauge to the place it is now.
The wagon will be available from 31 March 2027 from the NGS online shop and stands at a price of £18 for the full kit, which includes transfers. The kit number will be NGSK0820 – Kit 82.
